"Women Impressionists and Myself"

In honor of  Women's History Month, yesterday I presented, "Women Impressionists & Myself" at the Reeves Reed Arboretum, Summit, NJ.  My lecture coincides with my solo exhibition, "Impressions of a Garden."  I don't often have an opportunity to speak in a public venue about the Grande Dames of Impressionism and how they continue to inspired me, so this was a real treat! 

The Four women considered the center of the Impressionist movement of the late 1800’s are Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzales, and  Marie Bracquemond. Not only did these women have to over come a new movement , Impressionism, but they had to overcome being a woman and all that it meant at that time.

In this beginning of a new century where modern woman artists are an equal force to the men gender in the art world, the example of Mary Cassatt who insisted on painting women as subjects and not objects remains highly significant. The most charming part of Cassatt's story was her profound dedication to her work. Despite prejudices against female painters she still had the perseverance to realize her life's ambition of being an artist. This paved the way for the prominence of female artists in the 20th Century and to present day.

"Impressions of a Garden" will be on view at the Wisner House till May 8th, 2001.

My painting is my life's visual diary. While gathering reference last spring at the Reeves Reed Rose garden in NJ, I realized my daughter running around the property was more interesting to me. This winter I started a new series of her incorporated in gardens. This is a small mini sketch of a piece I plan on interpreting larger.

This is a detail of a mini sketch from a new series I am beginning. Every winter I tuck myself away in my studio and birth something new for the year. It is joyfully challenging to include my favorite subjects; flower gardens and my daughter. Stay tuned... I'll be posting others soon.

"Apples and Wine" was a painting demo from one of our Saturday morning painting classes. You can't see in this small jpeg, but the violet highlights in the shadow areas makes this piece a little jewel. Rarely do I paint a piece without flowers these days, but I think the apples are alive enough to roll right off the table.

I have to thank my neighbors, Diane and Lin, again for there splendid display of black-eyed susans!! I love that they plant a variety. The large one in the middle is called "Cherokee Sunset." It has a bright orange red center and feathery petals... I drool over them every time I visit.

In our first class here at my NJ studio, we all painted from life. We began the class with me painting a demo. This is the mini painting I completed. Irises symbolize hope and sunflowers happiness and sunshine. We had a lot of fun and students were pleasantly surprised that we all finished small paintings in ONE sitting! Next class is in June.

Remember the Farmer's Market post? Well, here's a mini inspired by the flowers I bought there. I really like the color and texture combination of the flowers so I decided to paint a larger piece based on this mini sketch. I'm sure to post it when it's finished.

I don't know if it is because I grew up in New England or that my mother planted violets in our backyard, but every time I notice these little flowers, I want to lay down in the grass and look for animal shapes in the clouds. :0)

My daughter is a two fisted watermelon eater. I can't possibly look at watermelon without thinking of her devouring this fruit with utter euphoria.

Here's the first of my "100 minis" collection!

What better way to kick off a painting series, than with a bowl of cherries on a hot summer day in August. The paint is nice and thick in this one. I have a few paintings now that feature my studio window in the background. I am calling them my "studio window series."

I adore irises and love paintings them even more! Fortunately, I live near The Presby Memorial Iris Gardens. This living museum of 80 years is dedicated to cultivating and displaying a rich variety of irises.
